Kulturen open-air museum
Right in the heart of Lund - 100 metres from the cathedral - lies this oasis of history, an open-air museum which is home to around 30 buildings from a variety of periods and locations.
Started in 1882, Kulturen is one of the world's oldest open-air museums. Here you will find preserved buildings where a whole cross-section of society lived and worked, from the wealthy to the poor, from academics to crofters.
Since the museum was founded, the aim has been to create a living microcosm of the world, giving visitors a view of different societies and an educational insight into different traditions and lifestyles.
The White House, the museum's main building, has permanent exhibitions of old-fashioned toys, Mediaeval weapons and various household objects. Permanent displays are blended with talks, concerts and around ten temporary exhibitions each year. The gardens consist of a blend of mature trees, plants and sculptures. The origins of every garden are linked to those of its neighbours, from one epoch and social class to another.
Kulturen is also home to the Night Hawker's – an old-fashioned grocery store where you can buy sweets and other goods from days gone by – as well as a children's workshop, a museum shop and a restaurant.
